I am doing another article about Khmer cinema and I was wondering if you could answer some questions for me. Don’t worry about grammar or spelling or anything, just if you could give me some answers that would be good. I won’t use your name in the story.
- when you are in Cambodia do you like to go to the cinema? Why or why not?
- do you watch more DVDs instead of cinema?
- when you watch DVD what country are they usually from? Do you prefer Khmer, American or some other country?
- I think I sent you email about Tim Pek an Australian Khmer who made a movie about the Khmer Rouge. In the movie a Khmer refugee in Australia discovers that her father’s killer is also alive in Australia and she has to decide if she should forgive him or kill him. Do you think this is an important movie? Would you want to see that movie?
- Do you think it is good for Khmer young people to see a movie like this and to know about the Khmer rouge history?
- Most Khmer movies are only love stories, kung fu, or really silly comedy. Why is that?
- Do you think Khmer really only like the simple sappy silly movies or do you think the censorship keeps the movies stupid? Or do you think that the people just don’t know any other kind of movie and maybe if they could see a different kind of movie they would like it.
- Talk about Khmer Rouge movies that have been made in Cambodia to date. Until now, what kind of movies have been made about Khmer Rouge?
- have any movies been made dealing with the aftermath or the feelings people had after Khmer rouge or dealing with modern Cambodia ?
- do you think the Khmer rouge is too recent and people are afraid to think about it or make movies about it?
- when I am talking to Khmer young people obviously they all know the Khmer rouge happened, but they don’t seem to know any dates or names or events or history. I speak Khmer a lot better now than I did when we were filming together and yet I still hire a translator to help me out. But I always find the translators know nothing about Cambodian history. Is this also the experience you have dealing with Khmers in Cambodia ? Why do you think this is? Do Khmer youngsters growing up in Australia know their cultural history?
- how much is a ticket cost in Cambodia ? And how much money does it cost to make the average movie? And how much does a movie have to earn to be considered a success?
- Every Khmer movie I have ever seen is either filmed at riverside in Phnom Penh or in the rice farming village. There isn’t a lot of visual difference from movie to movie. Even period pieces are filmed in exactly the same locations just with different costumes. Do Khmer people notice this? Do they prefer it this way or would they be interested to see something different?
- Is there any reason that the government or others wouldn’t want your movie shown in Cambodia ?
